Pattern Formation in Drosophila Embryos
Erice Wieschaus Part 1:   Wieschaus describes early development in the Drosophila embryo. He explains how maternally deposited bicoid mRNA results in the formation of a gradient of Bicoid protein in the embryo. This gradient is ultimately responsible for the distinct fates of individual cells. With wonderful movies of early embryo development, this lecture is suitable for undergraduate or grad students studying development.

The Role of Morphogen Gradients in Development
Erice Wieschaus Part 2:  In this lecture, Wieschaus describes in more detail how the Bicoid gradient is formed and maintained. GFP labelled Bicoid and live cell imaging allow the roles of diffusion and cytoplasmic streaming in establishing the gradient to be assessed. Suitable for graduate students in developmental biology and perhaps biophysics.

The Evolution of Bicoid-based Patterning
Erice Wieschaus Part 3: Flies or Diptera come in different sizes as do their eggs. However, in all dipteran eggs early development is dependent on a gradient of Bicoid protein. Wieschaus discusses how scaling of the Bicoid gradient in different fly eggs is achieved. Suitable for graduate students in developmental biology.
