Speaker Biography

Ruth Lehmann is a Professor of Developmental Genetics and of Cell Biology, and Director of The Kimmel Center for Stem Cell Biology at the Skirball Institute, New York University School of Medicine. She has also been a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator since 1990.

As a graduate student with Christiane Nusslien-Volhard at the University of Tubingen, Lehmann discovered a maternal gene that is required for germ cell development in the posterior region of Drosophila. Upon receiving her PhD, Lehmann continued her pioneering studies on maternal genes, germ cell formation, and embryonic development, spending 8 years at Massachusetts Institute of Technology before moving to NYU in 1997.

Dr. Lehmann has received numerous awards including membership in the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Science.
